How often have you heard, “What do you have to be depressed about?” After being vulnerable, you’re shamed and ostracized for feeling something beyond your control. You’re even told it’s because you don’t work hard enough. You repeat that line until it becomes your daily mantra, not knowing you are gaslighting yourself into believing the problem doesn't exist. You lie to yourself if your parents/siblings/cousins can make it work, so can you. You push forward, but at what cost?

I empathize with your experience. Growing up in a Guyanese household, feelings were never discussed, and being upset was met with reprimands. And what my parents said was law, no matter how wrong it seemed. But life shouldn’t be like that. In addition to my struggles with Mental Health, my friends, family members, and community members were stigmatized and treated as “different”.
